People don’t seem to get that Rikers is a jail, not a prison. This means most people there are awaiting trial and simply have yet to be able to afford to bail themselves out. This means that in the eyes of the law, they are INNOCENT. These could very well be people who committed no crime at all and simply because they are poor, are forced to spend several years in these places being subjected to daily assaults and the threat of death before they even get the chance to plead their case in a court of law. I know this goes against everyones narratives, because it is easier for them to believe that being arrested and charged = guilt, but this is not the case. I would like to think if you were ever picked up and charged with a crime you didn’t commit, you would appreciate not being treated like your life is disposable simply because you are being held in jail for several years awaiting trial. You are either too ignorant to not know the difference between a jail and a prison, or you don’t seem to care so long as it is not YOUR body in one of them. Aside from all of this, even if there were no difference, there are still plenty of people who are actually innocent who have been falsely convicted of crimes they haven’t committed. So you really suggest that our jails and prisons SHOULD be inhumane due to the actual guilty people occupying them and that the actual innocent people who are forced to be there just have to deal?
