This film is a remake of 2 films, NOT a spoof of 1960's rom-coms. It is a remake of the 1964 film titled Sex and the Single Girl, starring Natalie Wood and Tony Curtis, and the 1959 film Pillow Talk, starring Rock Hudson and Doris Day. When I first saw Down with Love, I had a nagging feeling I had seen this story before. Sure enough, I DID see it before --- Natalie Wood ALREADY had played a liberated woman, who had published a revolutionary book, claiming that sex and involvement with men was unnecessary. Enter Tony Curtis, to prove her wrong. This is just Hollywood running out of ideas, and deciding to recycle old scripts. They don't realize there are still those of us who are old enough (and obsessed with films old & new), who readily recognize tired recycling of scripts & plots when we see it. What IS entertaining, is that Tony Randall appears in this remake -- he was in the original, playing the same character as David Hyde Pierce. Tony Randall's trademark characters in 1950 and 60's rom-coms, was the third wheel, who was in love with the leading lady (usually Doris Day), who preferred the leading man (usually Rock Hudson). This is additionally funny, because Tony Randall AND David Hyde Pierce are both gay (as was Rock Hudson). The other plot-twist in Down With Love, was borrowed from the film Pillow Talk, with Rock Hudson & Doris Day. Hudson pretends to be a naive, bachelor Texas rancher, visiting New York as a tourist. I will never forget laughing my ass off, watching Rock Hudson's character as the consummate playboy, who spends the entire film seducing Doris Day, and pretends to be another character (that is obviously gay), to further his seduction plans. There is a scene where Hudson (as the rancher) adopts very feminine behavior, saying he lives with his mother, who would just LOVE the recipe for this dip, whilst sticking his pinky finger WAY OUT, sipping his drink. Doris Day begins to wonder if he's gay, since he has never even tried to kiss her. I'm sure Hudson had great fun playing that scene (because of how close to reality it was for Hudson's true life) --- oh the irony !!! A closeted gay actor, playing a straight actor, whose character is pretending to be a gay alter ego, but whose true character is straight. Hudson must've enjoyed this alot --- too bad his audience couldn't appreciate how funny this was. But (like now), if an actor comes out, then opportunities to play all kinds of characters (gay or straight), pretty much goes out the window. In the case of Rock Hudson, James Dean, Marlon Brando, etc. ---- their careers would've been DONE. The movie-going public of that time, would NEVER have accepted that. Anyway --- just some fun movie trivia, for those that enjoy it. 😊😮
