It’s implied in one show that the Eds have been friends since they were very small children, so I think Double D sticking with Eddy in season 5 despite the odds they’re always at makes sense. This is a lifelong friend he’s almost always had. They’re like brothers. They work each other’s nerves but still always have each other’s backs. That being said, they also seem to be at the age where they’re going to start going into puberty, which could also explain the personality shift in them. think Ed has undiagnosed mental health issues, possibly even autism based on his actions and how he can hyper fixate on things to the point of obsession, but his parents don’t care enough about him to get him the help he needs. He’s stressed and going through physical changes that are scary without the support of family. Because of the obvious neglect and abuse he suffers from his family, he has negative coping mechanisms to that stress and that’s why we’re seeing. Where as before he had summer and time to be carefree, he now has to worry about grades, homework, teachers, all the stress that comes with school, all added on top of going through puberty. Eddy is aggressive because he has frustrations with the same stress but no other healthy way to let it out. Double D is kind of starting to come to the realization of what kind of character Eddy has, but because this is his oldest friend, the closest thing to a sibling that he has, he’s afraid to let go of their friendship. I think by the time high school ends, they’ll both still be friends with Ed, but they’ll be much more distant with each other. That’s what usually happens to childhood friendships when you grow up. I can’t see Double D turning down any offers he may get into a big name STEM school since knowledge and learning are his passion. Eddy may TRY to go to a business school or something similar, and he may do a good job, but I think he’s more likely to start his own business and go from there. He may grow out of scamming others or he might not, it’s hard to say. Ed might go to a school for the arts and become a comic book artist/writer or do something with movies, or he’ll do something completely different and unexpected (they all might). Either way, it’s unlikely they’ll be able to remain physically close after high school based on what we know of their passions and personalities, so a strong friendship might be hard to maintain, though I do think Double D and Eddy will keep in touch with Ed longer because they’re the only real support system he has, so they might continue a good relationship with him for longer.
