My father enlisted in the Navy in 1937 and was stationed in the South China Sea in 1938. He spent time in mainland China and would on occasion witness the casual barbarity the Japanese would inflict on the Chinese civilians. He said that it a commonly held thought even among the lower ranks, that war with Japan was going to be inevitable. He was stationed at the U.S. naval base at Cavite, Philippines when the Japanese attacked Pearl, then bombing Cavite on December 10th, 1941. There were 2 waves of attacks with casualties estimated at 500 men seriously wounded or killed. The fires burned out of control until the next day completely consuming the shipyard. During the initial wave, a bomb went off close to my father, knocking him and his shipmates off their feet. He woke up, went to stand up and felt something heavy , he looked down and was covered in blood and gore. He thought he had been been wounded and running on pure adrenaline thought it was the end. He realized he wasn't wounded and wiping the gore and blood off realized it was the remains of shipmates that hadn't been as lucky. He said the early days of the war were very dark for the U.S. with everyone realizing that Midway was a big turning point in the Pacific. He said you couldn't find a man in uniform who, having fought the Japanese and witnessed their behavior toward civilians and military alike, didn't rejoice in the use of the Bombs. He didn't return to the States until 1946 and was shocked at how much had changed in 9 years. He made a career out of the Navy until 1968
