I had a friend just like this. We were having a blast of a time being good buddies but the time that we wouldn't spend together he would find other company that introduced him to various dangerous substances. When we met however he was always sober, or at least trying to act like it, but once I was back to work, he found his way back to his friends that only fueled his bad behavior and addictions. After three interventions I just had to move on since I have a whole life ahead of me, and if I can't have him help us build a better future, then I can't have him dragging me down. In the end you realize that these people are just bound for self destruction and constantly seek praise and company of people that fuel their actions. His behavior totally mirrors Ben's story - It's like thiprogrammed in their minds, and it's just sad.
