I'm an European living in the US and one of the things that surprised me the most about American culture is the complete ignorance about slavery in the world. When I moved here I just assumed that it was common knowledge that slavery is a universal thing that spanned the whole history of humans from the very beginning up to our days, and affected everyone across all races and ethnic and religious groups, but I was very much surprised to find out that in here people do not know about this.

I have a Thai gf. She never asks me for money. She has the equivalent of a two year degree, so she has a job away from the bars, but is still very poor.
