This last point maybe goes back to the second point. If you have not spent time through the dark-time together you can be percieved as an outsider for the rest of the year. You have to find the group, or groups that you spend the dark-time with to be completely embraced socially. But the dark-time is hard and draining, especially if you are not prepared for what is coming. With the growing demands on people these days of being productive all year round, I think you may understand the increase in demand for anti-depressants in all the Scandinavian countries. I think we do this stupidly today... we should do what we have done traditionally, and expect very little through the dark-time.
They needed to decide what they wanted the Counselor role to actually mean. At first, it was more like being Consul to the Captain on the bridge - someone who could advise on leadership strategies and intergalactic relations. Then, she ended up being a Counselor, as in someone who helps people work through coping & conflict in their everyday life. If she's the former, it makes sense for her to actually be on the bridge and wearing a real Starfleet uniform. If she's the latter, it makes sense for her to be called in occasionally for a mediation, but generally be working outside the bridge and interacting with the passengers. It's strange that they watered down her role so much that she ended up being basically neither of these things. I personally think it would be neat to really see the life of a ship's counselor - kind of like if you were to follow a chaplain in the military - but I think Roddenberry wouldn't have allowed it because he basically thought all societal ills (including mental health) would have been cured, so there's no need for a Mental Health/Family & Marriage Counselor on the Enterprise. (That's why Barclay is such an anomaly, but also basically a more interesting character than almost any of the women on TNG.)
