Although I applaud your approach and candor, I would like to comment that I cannot ever imagine (as a teenage boy) enduring a conversation with my mother about masturbation, regardless of the brevity of it. Furthermore, the latter part of your video that discusses pornography was particularly unsettling to me. I was dismayed at 7:33 when the two comments were displayed in the margin, discourage using porn and needing & wanting to watch pornography is unhealthy. Obviously, binge-watching hours of pornography by any teenager (boy or girl) is inappropriate, and I agree that there is (unfortunately) a plethora of pornography that's unhealthy for anyone to be consuming (at any age). I'm not attempting or wanting to initiate a lengthy debate about the association of masturbation and pornography or the evils of pornography - but at a minimum, please try to understand that there is an exceptional difference between the masturbatory behavior of boys/men and girls/women. I completely agree that it's not necessarily 100% an integral part of masturbation by boys/men, but it is very common to incorporate that into the behavior simply because men are visually aroused and it's exceptionally pleasurable to do so. Is it essential? No, of course not, but being visually aroused is in our d.n.a. and we cannot alter that physiological fact. As long as a boy/man is using pornography in moderation, and generally only when masturbating, that's likely 10-15 minutes per day. Under that assumption, how on earth can that be viewed as improper or indecent? I find it exceptionally ironic that at 1:45 in the video, you mention and list no judgements and don't lecture - but then you completely steamroll those maxims when you make the judgement that needing & wanting to watch pornography is unhealthy. Please consider that, after stating that to your teenage boy (I'm presuming this admonishment is more aimed at boys than girls), he then feels a tidal wave of guilt every subsequent time he masturbates while viewing pornography, which I can absolutely guarantee he will do because every boy does, at least on occasion. Perhaps not every time he masturbates, but certainly with some frequency. If there's any inclusion about the topic of pornography, the better advice would be to limit how much time you allot towards viewing it. Finally, I agree that watching pornography as an activity unto itself is not something that people of any age should engage in, and I'm also not suggesting that teenagers should be viewing it - but within the context I described above, it's also unlikely to cause any deleterious effects, as opposed to inflicting a lifelong burden of guilt and shame on your child because of your insistence that needing & wanting to watch pornography is unhealthy (at least while you masturbate). Thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts/opinions on the subject, and I welcome your response.
