You know the CC story has always bothered me, and btvs fans have known for years, but it never surprised me because you hear of so many directors in Hollywood who treat actresses this way. I always thought Joss’s relationship with his actors was toxic. He kept pushing SMG so far on the show, no matter how exhausted she seemed just being there. He picked favorites like Alyson, and then pitted the actresses against each other in this horrible unhealthy way. He was apparently not allowed to be on set with Michelle Trachtenberg when she was still a minor!! This story almost upsets me the most because like CC’s experiences it reveals Joss’s inherent sexism. So BTVS’s target audience was young adults, and that included teenage girls. As a teenage girl at the time let me tell you we watched for the sexy vampire dudes. We loved the storytelling, we loved the acting and dialogue and came to appreciate the philosophical concepts the show delved in, but at 15 and 16, we were watching for Angel and Spike. Angel leaves and gets his own show. That leaves Spike who was 1) sexy af 2) actually relevant to the story, and has connections and a backstory with Darla, Angelus, and Drusilla. He was never some rando! James is also a talented, charismatic, and attractive man! You think we weren’t going to turn into fan girls? You give him the best lines in the show and we’re not supposed to jump on the bandwagon? Joss just hates the concept of female sexuality (hence why he punishes all his female characters for it) and the fact that young girls usually go for the sexy vampire, not the straight Everyman, and not the nerdy nice guy. Oh boo hoo Joss! You want all your female characters in skimpy outfits but heaven’s forfend women have preferences too. Asshole!
