I remember watching Kerri Strung that day. She absolutely became a role model that day. I wasn't athletic due to a number of rare, chronic, genetic illnesses that I believe got together from all of my ancestors, and decided to have a party. Unfortunately that party was going on at the same time I was conceived. I have 4 inherited conditions, and another 2-3 that have taken the initiative to start their own thing. A little Chronic Illness Cocktail of their own, if you will. Before I started to require constant hospitalization and surgeries at about the age of 13, I loved soccer, floor hockey and even badminton (yes, I know, guffaw at will). I couldn't hit or catch a soft ball if my life depended on it, mom couldn't afford lessons, so I threw myself in the deep end one day and developed an ugly and inefficient stroke all my own, and basket ball was invented by Satan if you are 52' and your hips and breasts suddenly appeared on your 11 year old body over summer. I spent more time trying to keep my boobs under control than I cold give attention to dribbling a basketball, and I was NEVER going to make a basket. All junior high did was make me loathe sports. Thank God I had my first near death experience when I was 13, because, despite the worst suffering most people will ever endure maybe once in their life time, I had an amino acid deficiency that stopped me from producing Cystine. Therefor the substance crystalized and formed stones in my kidney. I had been passing small stones my whole life, an when I would finally emerge from the bathroom in tears and pain, I'd be taken to a pediatrician who always found a UTI. He just missed that the cause of these infections were kidney stones that cannot be seen with the standard xray equipment they had back in the early 80's.
