And now imagine my people, the Serbs. Our nobles had their first conflicts with the Ottomans in the 1350s with partial success. Then several victories, and 2 major defeats, the first; Battle of Marica in 1371, and then in the famous Battle of Kosovo in 1389, when almost the entire Serbian nobility and army perished from the 5 times larger Ottoman army. However, that was not the end. Because of Ottoman crimes and torture, as well as the stubborn resistance of my people, all Serbian lands fell under Ottoman rule only around 1500s. And already in the 1520s, the first Uprising of the Serbs took place in present-day Northern Serbia and Southern Hungary. After that, the Uprising of the Serbs broke out in the Banat (region between Serbia and Romania) in the 1540s. When the Kingdom of Hungary also falls under the rule of the Ottomans, the Austrian Empire becomes the champion of the fight against the Ottomans (the ranks of its army were mostly Serbs and Hungarians, eager for revenge). Also, some members of the heavy Serbian cavalry go all the way to Poland, and show the Poles their new fighting style, which over time became a mixture of European, Medieval knights, but also light Ottoman warriors on horses. Hussar is a word that originated from the Serbian word Gusar/Pirate..Warriors who were literally pirates, made raids as avengers on former Serbian and now Ottoman territory, but not on water but on land...Of course, over time, the letter G changed to H, and so the word Hussars remained..Serbia gained partial independence only in 1830 (de facto) and de jure only after the Berlin Congress in 1878. While all the Balkan states together in the First Balkan War in 1912 almost completely expelled the Ottomans from Europe back to Anatolia. Imagine that centuries-old struggle!? The first battles were in armour, on horseback, in the middle of the 14th century, and the last battles, at the beginning of the 20th century, such as the Battle for the city of Skadar/Shkodër (in today's Albania) in 1912, were fought in an almost modern way. Then, in the sky above Shkodër, the Serbian and Ottoman Air Force clashed for the first time.. Although machine guns were not yet installed on planes, as in WW1, the pilots shot at each other with pistols or revolvers. Of course, that was when the first bombings of infantry positions took place, by throwing ordinary hand grenades from airplanes at the infantry in the trenches!
