The symbolism in this song and video is actually amazing. The effort he has submitted just to develop this is truly breathtaking. You see this whole song, video, and persona are just the catalysts used to build this amazing art piece on depression. The sheer amount of symbolism he has used within this entire project would make even the most prestigious English teacher blush. Let's begin with the dance. You see he is flossing like one flosses their teeth. The teeth symbolize the joy that comes with having meaning and tasks to distract oneself with and the dental floss represents how he keeps shifting in between those routines and happiness. Notice how when he does the floss dance move he actually never touches himself. This is like a piece of floss going in between a tooth but never actually touching the tooth or gums. This symbolises several things such as how despite him trying he never actually can achieve his goals due to his depression. Not only this but it also represents how he is so exhausted from life to a point where  he truly can no longer bare to complete miniscule tasks in his daily routine but with everyone looking at him he has to put on a show of him being okay and doing fine and performing well when in reality he is just faking it as he does not want to waste other people's time or put his issues onto others. He even has incorporated us into the symbolism as we represent the ones judging him as he performs this happy little show to make us think he is okay when in reality he is suffering. That is why he made the song seem lazily written to show how to us it may seem like he is barely trying to make something out of himself when in reality he barely has enough energy just to get through the day. You may be wondering why use teeth to build this symbolism? See, when people are depressed they typically quit keeping up good hygiene and so it could be either as a nice tid bit to those who are depressed and listening to the song to actually try and take care of themselves even if it seems difficult at first. Flossing could be that extra step one may need to get back into the routine of maintaining a semi healthy lifestyle. He even gives instructions on how to floss for those who may have forgotten due to how long they've been depressed. It could also be that he is using the fact that he never touches himself while doing the floss dance to indicate he himself has grown so depressed that he has given up on his oral hygiene. Even when he or someone else appears to actually be flossing a fake drawn in string is shown. When he raps, notice how the autotune also gives off the sound effect of somebody holding back tears or the effect that he may be attempting to hide the pain in his voice using the autotune itself. The video and lyrics also show examples of him contacting friends to hang out with them (or flossing with his friends). This was most likely added as he wanted to show those struggling with depression that forcing yourself out of your comfort zone to hang out with friends or interact with people could be a major step to getting out of the toxic cycle depression leaves you in. He even gives examples of how to find friends if you don't have many, like going to a basketball court or going to a party with a friend. I also find the fact that he has made one of his big trademarks the backpack he wears, even giving himself the name The Backpack Kid, interesting. It appears to me as if he is using this backpack to symbolise the weight and baggage that depression can bring and how it can truly be a constant struggle throughout life. At the very beginning of the video he is actually shown to have the backpack off when he wakes up. I believe this is because the only time he can truly find joy is when he is asleep and uses sleeping and his dreams as an escape method from life. However when he gets out of bed and leaves the house, he puts the backpack on. For the first half of the video he is shown hanging out with friends with the backpack on but I think it is interesting to note that at the final half of the video when he is hanging out with friends the backpack is nowhere to be seen showing us that while at first getting out a toxic routine can be hard, eventually the weight of depression fades away and you slowly become better. If it wasn't clear the backpack symbolises the struggles of depression: while walking down the street at the beginning of the video the backpack is shown to be on flames, further hardening the idea that the backpack is causing him pain. It should also be noted how he reacts to these symbolic flames. He does a little shake step thing but fails to exfoliate the fire. This is because he is too tired to even attempt to extinguish the flames as the stresses of life is already far too demanding, but he still uses what little energy he has left to try and solve the issue (but with little success). I think this also is to further strengthen the idea that getting out of a toxic routine can be hard at first and depression will try to get you to stay in a demanding and isolating comfort zone but you just have to fight it in order for you to get better. Another thing he does is mention himself flossing with the cops. This is to show that cops are there to help you and if you know a friend who may be thinking about suicide that you should contact the police for help. There are three parts of the video and song that really correlate with each other that most have probably not recognized. In the lyrics he explains how flossing can be found in France, in the video he is shown flossing with kids, really almost everyone is shown to be flossing, and also the video mostly takes place in what appears to be an upper class neighborhood. Most may not have realized this but this symbolises how common depression can be and how you are not alone. This shows how anyone can suffer through depression no matter their financial situation, age, or location. The only thing I don't fully understand is what he means by Left to Right. You see this could mean various things like the struggles of finding a job or him repeatedly walking left and right as he tries to find a solution to the problems he faces on a daily basis. Perhaps the vague symbolism is something he added on purpose for us to create our own interpretations, so that we can further relate to the song on a more personal level. For the most part however this song is truly a work of art and truly shows the magic that symbolism can bring. I think it is amazing that he was so focused on letting us figure out the symbolism on our own that when he could have easily explained it on genius, he simply didn't. The song and music video was clearly meticulously planned and well thought out as he tried to show those who may not have never suffered through depression what depression looks like, spread awareness of mental illness, give advice to those who are depressed on how to escape their depression, and show what depression feels like. I have made the decision as a parent to force my children to listen to this song at least 5 times a day as I feel this is the music our children need in order to train their brains and become more sophisticated. I honestly believe that if you are a parent reading this, that you should also do the same as it will help your child grow in his academic studies and creativity.
