So, North Carolina ignored estimates that predicted sea level rise and potential flood plains, and enforced legislation that prevented such information from informing their policies on urban development and infrastructure. How pathetically shortsighted, and how irresponsible to their constituents. Short term profit was placed above long term potential loss, along with a priority for property over human life and safety. These guys are going to reap what they sow, or more accurately, THEY won't, but their constituents will. We could be investing so much more in measures that will better prepare our countries for the impacts of climate change, and instead, they ignore sound evidence because it is inconvenient to development. Despicable. I work in housing and development, and our job includes taking into consideration the ethics of construction and the methods and materials used, not just for the luxury of the homeowners, but for the safeguarding of resources and land, too. Our company has enough money to throw at the city council to make zoning bylaws disappear, but we don't, because there's a benefit to supporting the evidence found by engineers, environmentalists, sociologists and historians. They can see trends and patterns and make educated assumptions based on those precedents that make our cities liveable. Politicians listen to industry, and money, nothing else.
