I think there are many reasons why there are so many changes in this new movie, the anti-gay policy is just one of them. Nobody in China liked the original animated film because it was too different from the original story that they know, with many seeing it as being disrespectful (i.e cultural appropriation), and that's why this movie flopped over there. The live-action film is supposed to be closer to the original story, although the purported romance in it is still a new addition, to better cater to their market. Again, if you don't like this fact, just remember that the first film had a similar purpose.
