I agree the male and female procedures are very different. In the case of males without bringing in the religious factors/reasons in strictly medical terms the male circumcision is a good thing because it drastically reduces all kinds of infections over the lifetime of the person. It is not just only urinary tract infections that it protects males from, but a whole host of other problems that are more likely to arise from having that extra piece of skin hanging closer to the area where urine flows out from. In the case of female circumcision no medical benefit comes from the procedure and in fact a female is more likely to have issues over time health wise outside of the lack of sexual stimulation. It truely is a case of apples and oranges. As a fan of mr. Christopher Hitchens I always did take issue with his views on this one argument. Granted he was coming at it from the religious ritualistic viewpoint that he was combating. I think if you look at it from a strictly medical point of view in terms of reducing the amount of medical issues a person has over a lifetime then people could have a more adult conversation about this topic. The differences in male and female anatomy is what this is all about. I have never heard an advocate for female circumcision ever come at it from a standpoint for its reasoning as a positive medical preventative care measure. I have only heard of its use as a tool in many Muslim groups to prevent a wife from cheating on her husband. Remember women in these parts of the world are not equal and often seen as a man's property. In those societies a womans only purpose in life is to bare children and take care of the home. I think eventually once these parts of the world evolve out of the dark ages and join the 21st century then female circumcision will start to decline. It is important for developed nations around the world to condemn its practice loudly and often. In the case of male circumcision most male babies born (above 80%) today get a non-religious doctor performed circumcision. Again... Apples and Oranges. Males and females are equal in almost every which way, but when it comes to certain things like circumcision people need to have an educated discussion. I respect anyone's opinion that may differ from my own, but the medical studies on this topic over the past century show why male circumcision is a very common practice which has many health benefits and on the other hand the female circumcision has many health problems that develop as a result of the practice.
