I live in Reno, so I not only experience the gigantic wall of complaints of the MOOP yearly on my social media feed, but I see the trail of trash all the way out of BRC along the road back to Reno. I attend the burn some years myself. I don't enjoy it as much as some, but I do have a good time where I find myself. I'm only out there for photographic purposes, mostly. I don't claim to be a burner. I think it's a little cultish to make your whole life revolve around representing the culture in your every day life and there's so much hypocrisy within the culture, as there is in any culture that has outgrown it's own ability to be self-regulating and for people to be motivated to be actually accountable. I would consider myself a minimalist and I literally bring myself and whatever food I pre-prepared, plus the other necessities for the minimum amount necessary to survive. I don't rely on others to feed me, but have camped with camps that prep meals for the camp for a fee. I literally leave with less than a third of a trash bag of my own trash and bring it home and use it the rest of the week at home until it's full. The years I do stay at camp until packing down, I do camp cleanup and bring more trash home. I do wish I was awake enough when leaving the event to have any motivation to clean along the roads, as staying up late and minimal sleep during the event due to both the photo work I'm doing and maybe partaking a little bit in extra curricular activities some night is a thing and makes it hard to keep your eyes open the whole ride back, after insanely long exoduses already. Considering people are not allowed to park along the side of the road just to sleep most of the way back from the playa, which is dangerous on it's own level, makes it hard for some of the more responsible folks to have motivation to stop and pick up after others. It makes me mad to see all the trash on the way back home. So many of the people that come out just don't care. I'm not going this year. I was pretty miserable last year and feel a bit separated from the culture in it's current form. Most of the people I know that respect the land are the people that go out there from Reno, as many of us are not going as big as people that travel from wherever else just to bring all their trash and ditch their bikes and some other camping equipment that they'll just re-buy for next year... I don't know if I'm going back out again. Last year was kind of a last straw bummer of a year in a lot of ways. The worst trash trail I've seen so far as well.
